On the Street... by Chuck Haney

Wow, let the sun shine and the temperature hit 60 plus degrees and everyone seems to be in a good mood and smiling. I know it is short-lived, but the rain may get rid of the rest of the snow and clean things up a little.

Bob and Janet Keller, owners of E-Z Do Laundry, a block west of Hy-Vee, along with new owners Brent and Fara Minnick, announced in the Ad Pages last week the sale of the laundry.

The Kellers said they decided it was time to put their feet up and take it easy after 23 years of owning and operating the popular laundry. The former owners said that one of their priorities was taking care of their customers and friends and that they will certainly miss that.

The Kellers also said in their ad that the new owners Brent and Fara Minnick are great people and an asset to the community and they were sure that the Minnicks would continue the same type of service that they had been giving the past 23 plus years.

Mrs. Keller told me that she thought they (E-Z Do Laundry) had been in the Ad Pages from the first publication when my son Kevin started it and they always had good success and I told her I appreciated that.

Brent Minnick, who has been an agent for American Family Insurance in Chillicothe for 13 years, said that he and his wife Fara had bought the laundry business as an investment and did plan to update it in the near future. Mrs. Minnick is employed at Verelle Peniston State School. He said his wife would continue her employment at the school but would assist part-time in the new business when needed.

The Kellers told me that the Minnicks would be only the third owner of the business that has been in its present location on Walnut Street since 1949. The late Forrest Adams opened the E-Z Do laundry and ran it for 40 years until selling it in 1987 to the Kellers. That makes only three owners in 63 years.

CES (Cutting Edge Supplements) will be the latest new business to open in Chillicothe. The business owned by Desmond Bloss of Brookfield, will officially open next Monday in the former Rudy’s Smoke Shop building at 110 South Washington and next door to Chillicothe Bootery & Shoe Repair.

Bloss said that the business will feature health nutrition items and a wide variety of sports fitness items. Store hours will be Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The official grand opening of the new $3 million Comfort Inn & Suites hotel in the Stoneybrooke Shopping Center at the junction of business 36 and U.S. 65 was very successful and well received last Friday.

Spike and Scott Ehrhardt of Hannibal, the father-son co-franchise owners said that more than 300 people signed the book at the three-hour plus open house, Chamber ribbon cutting and celebration

“It went so well and so many people had so many nice things to say about our hotel,” said Spike Ehrhardt. My son Scott and I along with our General Manager Meagan Macoubrie want to thank everyone who had a part in this successful event.”

The Ehrhardts also wanted to give a thank you to the nine food, catering and drink vendors that provided a large selection of appetizers and the 36 business places that donated door prizes and Mobile DJ Service for music (see ad this edition).

Those speaking at the grand opening besides the Ehrhardts were Jim Nugent, the lead contractor (Thomas Construction); Bill Bolletta of Choice Hotels; Kelly Petrie, District Manager, Macon; and General Manager Meagan Macoubrie. Theresa Ehrhardt gave the prayer. The franchise co-owners said “Chillicothe is a great community and we are proud to be a part of it.”

Last week in our first of a series of the historic downtown area, we wrote about three businesses located on the east side of the square and all doing very well.

Our next stop is Essential Kneads Day Spa and Café, LLC at 607 Locust. It opened last fall and the dual business is already preparing for a remodel of the café area, according to owners Darrell Distler and Jill Distler.

“We are going to take out most of our restaurant stools and put in more booths and table space up front,” said Distler. He said the breakfast being served all day has been a hit with many.

“Bookings are better than we ever anticipated,” said Jill Distler for the day spa and more. “It is going so well that we are extending our hours during the daytime and now taking special appointments after hours.

The area at the back of the café is handled by Jill, Jessica and Kelly and includes massage, manicures, pedicures, body wraps and scrubs as well as tanning and assorted packages (see ad this edition).

Before getting to the Here and There events I have a correction and an addition to last week’s story on Hometown Pharmacy, its closed door pharmacy (nursing homes and county jail) next door and the Hometown Healthy Living Store two doors north.

It was Partner Pat Gates who brought the idea to Mike Palmer about opening a new pharmacy as she, Melissa King and Mr. Palmer hooked up as original partners. Mrs. Gates and Mrs. King came over in 2001 from another pharmacy when Hometown opened its doors.

Mrs. King is no longer a partner but does work part-time at Hometown and Scott Cady and his wife Mary became partners in the pharmacy operation in 2009.

Dr. Trinidad says he now can go in his car anywhere and not be afraid to have it stolen. His other set of keys for his car was in the purse too.
